A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
